Vulvodynia (provoked or unprovoked) is the sensation of vulval burning and soreness in the absence of any obvious skin condition or infection. Abnormal nerve fibre signals from the skin are felt as a sensation of pain and symptoms are often of a burning, aching nature in varying degrees of intensity from mild discomfort to a severe constant pain which can even prevent you from sitting down comfortably. The pain is usually continuous and can interfere with sleep. The pain in unprovoked vulvodynia is not always restricted to the vulval area, some women get pain around the inside of the thighs, upper legs and even around the anus and urethra. Often this leads to sexual dysfunction. The cause is unknown and there is no cure, although treatments can be effective in managing the symptoms.
Neuropathic pain often follows an injury to the nervous system following a soft tissue injury or surgery. Damage to the nerve fibres cause the nerves to fire off incorrect pain signals to the brain. Symptoms may include burning, numbness, sharp shooting pain or tingling. Normal treatment is not always effective and over time, symptoms may increase to such an extent that it leads to serious disability.
